| Savanna Drilling Hybrid Rigs for Vertical & Horizontal DrillingSavanna’s patented Hybrid rigs have dominated shallow drilling in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin since their launch in 2001. The unique design allows operators the choice of drilling with conventional drill pipe,casing, or coiled tubing, all from the same highly mobile platform. The Hybrid rigs are capable of Drilling up to 2200 m, and have drilled over 22,000 wells in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin since their introduction. Unlike conventional double oil drilling rigs and unique to the Hybrid drilling rig is their efficiency not only in vertical drilling, but in horizontal drilling as well. This configuration of hydraulic draworks, topdrive, and coiled tubing injector means that it’s the first coiled tubing driller that does not require preset surface casing, and is capable of running casing itself. Typically the main hole section will be drilled with coil as the rate of penetration is significantly higher than jointed pipe because there are no connections to be made. Coil is still more efficient for some applications of drilling. If an operator’s program calls for horizontal drilling that is beyond the capabilities of coiled tubing, then the Hybrid rig can switch over to conventional pipe in a matter of minutes, and finish the horizontal section as efficiently as any topdrive equipped modern drilling rig. The Hybrid rigs are the most efficient way to drill any well up to 2200 m. Period. Coiled tubing brings many strengths and capabilities, but because the Hybrids also drill efficiently with drill pipe, the rigs can complete any horizontal drilling program more efficiently than a conventional rig. Savanna’s hybrid fleet consists of 38 First Generation Hybrid Rigs (CT1500) capable of drilling up to1,500m vertical with 2 7/8" coiled tubing or 1,200m with 3 1/2" drill pipe. Additionally, 8 Second Generation Hybrid (CT2200) are available, capable of drilling up to 2,200m vertical deep with 3 1/2" coiled tubing or drill pipe. All units, absent weather or operational downtime have worked continuously since being introduced. Savanna Drilling has expanded its fleet of hybrid rigs aggressively to meet customer demand, and has recently introduced two Hybrid rigs specifically designed for the Coal Seam Gas market in Australia.
